Our initiative is working toward a new approach to renovation at KIT. The current process — emptying a building, renovating it, and then moving in a new faculty — is far too slow to keep up with the massive renovation backlog. At the same time, new buildings are being constructed for research projects while existing ones continue to fall into disrepair.

We believe there’s a better way. We propose renovating buildings while they are still in use. Using the severely deteriorated physics building as a case study, we want to show that this is possible — and that the quality of space can already be improved along the way.

By reorganizing how existing space is used and placing technical infrastructure on the outside of buildings, we create the conditions for renovation and use to happen simultaneously.This means making the most of what’s already there: achieving better spatial quality, greater sustainability, and avoiding unnecessary new construction.
